Kokugaku
The dominant study of Chinese, Confucian, and Buddhist texts has led to a decline in Japanese study. A few scholars have started to research the early Japanese classics, criticizing the repressive moralizing of Confucian thinkers, and attempts to re-establish Japanese culture before the influx of foreign modes of thought and behavior. They call themselves Kokugaku, or 'National Study' thinkers.
