Rise of the Ṣafawiyya
The rich Sufi Ṣafawiyya sect in northwestern Persia has begun a transformation from a largely ascetic sect into a military order. The ideas of the sect have come a long way since initially founded by Ṣāfī ad-Dīn Isḥāq Ardabīlī in the past, getting closer to Shiism in comparison with its Sunni origins. Now, its doctrine has taken even another step, as the leaders of the sect are more and more being regarded as semi-divine beings, and its faithful are becoming increasingly militant.
