The Bosnian Question
In recent years, Bosnia has been growing increasingly disloyal towards us, and the efforts of Bosnian Ruler to undermine our authority and remove the last vestiges of our influence from Bosnia are no longer just rumors. Our advisors are worried that supporters of Bosnian independence might be plotting with our enemies, and should we remain ignorant of this situation, we might be dragged into a war we cannot afford to lose. Perhaps it would be wiser to quietly let them go, instead of trying to enforce our rule over Bosnia at any cost.

His calculated noncompliance resulted in Bosnia withholding military assistance, offering bribes, and leaking military information to Hungary's rivals. Bosnia engaged in an independent diplomacy with its Hungarian opponents that could entangle Hungary in unwanted wars from which it could barely benefit. Due to that pressure, Hungary gradually retreated from active governance, and by the later 14th century, Bosnia was effectively a nominal vassal with no obedience to Hungary.
