Originally conceived as a society, it adopted Saint George as its patron saint and drew inspiration from the Order of St. George founded by King Charles I of Hungary. Tasked with defending the Hungarian monarchy, the Catholic Church, and Christendom itself, the order united nobles in a common cause and became an emblem of the struggle against the 'perfidious Enemy'—primarily the Ottoman Turks. Through its symbols of the ouroboros and the red cross, the order forged a unique identity, binding members to an oath of loyalty to the king, queen, and their heirs, offering royal protection, honors, and privileges in return for their steadfast service.
