Although Corsica, conformed by the provinces of Cismonte and Pumonte, is formally under the sovereignty of the Country, the local politics of the Corsican island is traditionally dominated by five noble clans. One of them is the family of the Banda dei Fuori, which brought out the ambitious Arrigo Della Rocca. Originally held hostage by the Genoese after his father was forced to give him away, Arrigo Della Rocca joined the army of Aragon and made a living as a soldier of fortune.
Eventually, he returned to the island and was elected count of Corsica by the other noble clans with Aragonese support, undermining the Country Adjective authority over the island even further.
