A close friend of the King, he rose to power following the downfall of Cardinal Wolsey, but would ultimately fall from grace owing to religious divergences. He was a devout Roman Catholic and opposed the Protestant Reformation, therefore refused to accept King Henry VIII's break from the Roman Catholic Church.
