Target Character and the New World Mission
Friar Target Character has approached the Court Title with an unusual proposal. Inspired by the humanist ideals of knowledge and understanding, he wishes to embark on a journey to the New World. His goal is to study the traditions, languages, and customs of our Nahua subjects in Mesoamerica. While such an undertaking may seem unusual, deeper understanding of the people we govern could aid in their better integration into the Christian world.

5384historical_info = flavor_cas.86.historical_info Bernardino de Sahagún was a Spanish Franciscan friar, missionary, and ethnographer. After traveling to New Spain in 1529, he dedicated himself not only to the conversion of indigenous peoples but to an unprecedented study of their culture, beliefs, history, and languages. His deep respect for native traditions set him apart from many of his contemporaries. Sahagún mastered the Nahuatl language and believed that understanding their culture was essential to truly converting them to Christianity, rather than imposing faith by force alone.
