It was triggered after the death of King Sebastian of Portugal and his elderly successor Henry, leaving Portugal without a clear heir. King Philip II of Spain, grandson of Manuel I of Portugal, claimed the Portuguese throne through his maternal lineage. Philip II was recognized as King of Portugal after a brief military campaign, uniting the crowns of Castile, Aragon, and Portugal under the Spanish Habsburgs. However, Portugal maintained separate administrative institutions, laws, and colonial holdings. The union ended due to the Portuguese Restoration War in 1640-1668, which restored Portuguese independence under the House of Braganza.
