A member of the powerful House of Habsburg, Charles inherited a collection of realms through the marriages of his grandparents, the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, and his paternal Habsburg lineage. As Emperor, Charles V faced immense challenges: religious strife following Martin Luther's reforms, wars against France, and defending Europe against Ottoman expansion. His reign marked the peak of Habsburg power. Toward the end of his life, exhausted by endless conflicts, Charles abdicated in 1556, splitting his empire between his brother Ferdinand, who became Roman Emperor, and his son Philip II, who ruled Spain and its overseas possessions.
