While attempting to aid a local ally in a conflict, Magellan and his small contingent of men faced fierce resistance from Lapu-Lapu, a native chieftain. Underestimating the strength of the opposing forces, Magellan was struck down by warriors wielding spears and swords. Though his death marked a significant setback, Juan Sebastián Elcano took the lead of the expedition and pressed on, eventually completing the first circumnavigation of the globe on September 6, 1522.
