Yet it was not Spanish arms alone that brought about its downfall. In order to gain an advantage over the Aztecs, Cortés skillfully exploited the widespread resentment among the Aztec's tributary states and rivals, particularly the Tlaxcalans, Totonacs, and Huexotzincas, who had long suffered under Aztec dominance, forced tributes, and human sacrifice. These native allies proved decisive as they contributed tens of thousands of indigenous warriors that joined the Spanish cause.
