The Fate of Montserrat
Santa Maria de Ripoll was the cultural center of Catalonia since it was founded in 888 by Count Wilfred 'The Hairy'. For centuries, its scriptorium has been as important as those in Montecassino or Saint-Denis, but its last glory has long gone. Its position as the family mausoleum for the Count of Barcelona and Besalú has guaranteed good donations that made the monastery really powerful.
In the last decades, the offshoot of Santa Maria de Montserrat monastery has been demanding to be independent of Ripoll. Should we support that independence, Ripoll's fate might be sealed, but many wonder if that is not the natural process of things.
