The Parliament is exhausted. Petitions from soldiers' families, from bankrupted merchants, from priests asked to bless too many graves have piled up faster than victories. Even those who cheered loudest when we first declared war now look ashen-faced when the bills arrive. We can inspire them once more with the promise of eventual triumph, or we can acknowledge the toll this war has taken. Either way, we cannot ignore the mood in those chambers much longer.
