1677historical_info = flavor_vij.28.historical_info Built by the Chola ruler Dharmavarma, Ranganathaswamy Temple is the oldest surviving temple complex in Southern India. Even though it enjoyed prosperity in its early years, during the 14th century the Muslim general Malik Kafur looted it and sent its golden icon back to Delhi. It took six decades for the temple to be reclaimed, and it was under the Vijayanagari rule that the temple saw 200 years of prosperity, as the Empire focused on repairs and reinstalling its old icons of Vishnu and Lakshmi.
