After being founded by Harihara and Bukka Raya, it slowly became a central hub for every Hindu citizen in the subcontinent. That is not to say it was a religious city, as many monuments were multi-religious. During the 16th century, it was captured and looted for 6 months by a coalition of Muslim Sultanates.
