Discontent with our rule is growing in Al-Maġrib al-Awsat, where an unsteady power balance between the Janissaries and the Barbary corsairs have taken form. They have attained significant power, and seem poised to try and break free from Country. However, we still have a possibility to defuse the situation, by bribing influential strongmen among the ever-greedy corsairs to declare for our side.

But after the autocrat Ali Agha was killed during the English attack in 1671, a new order took form, characterized by institutionalized relations between the local Janissaires, who held the military power, and the corsairs, who controlled the trade. This arrangement led to Algiers becoming effectively independent from the Ottoman Empire.
