The Calligrapher Couple
Celaleddin and Esma are a married couple, and the finest calligraphers that have been seen for a generation. While Celaleddin is well-established in the field, Esma is a prodigy with great promise, despite her modest humility. Many at Court Title are so impressed with the couple's work that they want to employ them permanently to make ornaments for our palaces and mosques. Even if we let them return to their married life in peace, a generous lifetime grant would be in order.

15176historical_info = flavor_tur.181.historical_info Mahmud Celaleddin Efendi hailed from Dagestan, and became one of the leading calligraphers of his era. He took much inspiration from Hâfiz Osman, the great 17th century calligrapher. Esmâ Ibret Hanim was a young prodigy, his student, and eventually his wife. Celaleddin was initially reluctant to take on a female student, but changed his mind at once when he saw her work. The sultan Selim III and his mother were also very impressed by Esmâ's skill, and awarded her with a grant of 500 Kuruş.
