He could draw support from local Shia clans thanks to his policy of religious tolerance, and grew rich on the trade in cotton and olive oil. He was constantly challenged by the governor of Damascus, as well as his own sons, and in a complicated series of intrigues, eventually earned the enmity of the government in Constantinople. This led to his downfall, and the ruin of his dynasty, but his rule left a lasting legacy in Palestine.
