He tutored the sultans Ahmed II, Mustafa II and Ahmed III, but also gave lessons to the poor. Calligraphy was a very venerable and treasured art form in the Islamic world, but Hâfiz mastered the balance between innovation and respect for tradition. His template for the Hilye art form, abstract depictions of Muhammad, became standard in the Ottoman Empire.
