A Scarcity of Scribes
Our bureaucracy, the Mālīye, has become a vast machinery of scribes, accountants and officials, committed to ensuring the stability of the Flavor Rank. But the bureaucracy needs to be staffed by diligent scribes with a great command of the written word, and they are finding it increasingly hard to find such men. High officials within the bureaucracy are pleading for more state funding, cautioning us that right now, many chairs in their offices are empty, and the shelves full of dust.
