The Cost of Science
The many scholars among the Clergy are finding it more and more difficult to find work. While Qāḍī are always in demand, those positions are coveted and highly competitive, and there is not enough for all. Fathers are now advising their sons not to become scholars, and perhaps not even study in the Madrasa at all. They miss now, the scholars say, the days of 'Alī al-Qawshajī and Taqī ad-Dīn, when science of all kinds was still appreciated by the state.
