2253historical_info = flavor_swe.45.historical_info Intense mining activities and unstructured expansion of mining shafts culminated in a catastrophic collapse on Midsummer's Day, June 25, 1687. A previous collapse in 1655 had already caused several older mine shafts to merge. During the 1687 disaster, a significant portion of the mine caved in, merging three major open pits into the massive 'Stora Stöten', a colossal sinkhole almost 2 kilometers in circumference and about 100 meters deep. Remarkably, no lives were lost in the collapse, as Midsummer's Day — along with Sundays and prayer days — was a work-free holiday at the mine.
