Oriental Liason Fyodor Baikov recently paid a visit to China, aiming to establish diplomatic ties and ensure a treaty of mutual respect. He received clear instructions to not engage in any humiliating rituals that would imply Russia's inferiority to China. Therefore, when he arrived a the gates of the Forbidden City he refused to perform a kowtow when asked, as that would mean the recognition of the supremacy of the Qing Empire by the Russian state according to Chinese concepts. This granted him several months of isolation and further expulsion from Beijing.
