He became close friends with the future patriarch during a diplomatic visit to Poland, where he was being held captive. This friendship helped secure Ivan a future place at court and several influential positions, including the boyar duma. Towards the later stages of his life, he fell out of favor and was exiled, only to return following the death of the patriarch. He retired to a convent a few years later, where he died a monk.
