For years, our attention in military matters has shifted away from our auxiliary troops. The sweeping devastation caused by recent plagues in combination with the attempted reformation of the lower ranks and the redistribution of iqṭā' lands has led to this. Soldiers that were once bestowed great glory and prestige to accompany our Mamālīk in battle have now become ruffians, their ranks compromised.
Recent changes in their registration requirements have resulted in military training not being a prerequisite for membership in these units. The situation is so bad that many Ḥalqah squads are made up of elderly or disabled folk, or even children...
