Hungary has suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of Ottomans. With our royal ties to Hungary through marriage, the responsibility to act now falls upon us. Many voices in the Court Title argue that we must step in to claim the Hungarian throne to halt the Ottoman onslaught. If Europe is to be saved from this scourge, it is clear that only we have the strength to unite the forces necessary to resist them.

This created a power vacuum that both the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand I and the Transylvanian noble John Zápolya sought to fill. As the husband of Louis's sister Anne, Ferdinand claimed the throne based on dynastic rights and was elected King of Hungary by a faction of Hungarian nobles in 1526.
