Event
The Language Dollar

The currencies used in our Flavor Rank have become a mess, as the main one, the maravedí, has very little use other than accounting. Our experts say that if we were to create two new currencies, one of gold and one of silver, and back them up to be of pure quality, our economy as a whole would benefit from the move, especially long-distance trade.
We also have the option of keeping the old one and benefiting from a further devaluation of the same by minting more low-quality maravedíes, which would increase our income in the short term.

3964historical_info = flavor_cas.66.historical_info The monetary system of the Crown of Castile in the second half of the 15th century was very complex to operate. The maravedí, the main currency of account, had been continuously devalued since the 13th century. In addition, there were different regional currencies in the Iberian kingdoms, which complicated the economics of the political unification initiated with the wedding of Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. Therefore, in 1497 a monetary reform was initiated, establishing a new gold coin, the ducat, and a new silver coin, the real, for use in both kingdoms. Given the unexpected influx of silver from the Americas in the following decades, the use of the 'real de a ocho' skyrocketed, which would soon become widely known as the 'Spanish dollar'. It is considered the first global currency, as it was accepted by merchants all over the world, from Africa to America and from Europe to Asia.
