Castile's forces were led by King John I of Castile, aiming to secure the Portuguese throne for his wife, Beatrice of Portugal. Facing them was a much smaller army led by John, Master of the Military Order of Aviz, and his English allies. Castile's larger army launched repeated assaults but was decisively defeated due to poor coordination and effective Portuguese resistance, turning the day into a Castilian catastrophe.
