A family named Fugger, from the mercantile patriciate of Augsburg became one of the most prominent group of European Bankers during the 15th and 16th century. Much of the European economy was controlled by them, and they ended up with a near monopoly of the copper market. Historically they were very well connected with the House of Habsburg whose rise to world power they financed.
