Guelfolar ve Ghibellinolar, Katolik Kilisesi Leader Title ve Kutsal Roma İmparatorluğu Leader Title Tayin Skandalı'ndan ötürü birbirine düştüğünden beri, birkaç asırdır İtalya bölgesinin egemenliği için savaşıyor. Guelfolar Roma otoritesini desteklerken Ghibellinolar Kutsal Roma İmparatorluğu Leader Title destekçisi. Yine de iki taraf da ilk baştaki görüşlerinden uzaklaşıp artık farklı çıkar odaklarını temsil ediyor. Farklı ülkeler de kendi faydaları doğrultusunda taraf değiştirmeye aşinadır.
