695historical_info = flavor_por.12.historical_info 1650年生まれの優れた外交官ジョン・メシュエンは、1703年にイングランド・ポルトガル間で結ばれた条約でその名を知られている。この条約の主な目的は、ポルトガルのワイン（ポートワイン）のイングランドへの自由な持ち込みと引き換えに、ポルトガルにイングランドの羊毛の輸入を認めさせることにあった。この条約により、ポルトガルは実質的にイングランドの経済的・政治的な衛星国となった。1750年にジョゼ1世が条約を無視するまで実質的に運用されつづけ、形式的には1836年まで有効だった。ジョン・メシュエンは最大の成功を収めた直後の1706年に亡くなった。
