1949historical_info = flavor_por.29.historical_info 5 Aralık 1496 tarihinde İspanya'nın Katolik Hükümdarlarından gelen baskılar sonucu Portekiz Kralı I. Manuel, Prenses Isabella ile evliliğinin bir koşulu olarak tüm Yahudilerin din değiştirmesini, kabul etmeyenlerin de sürgün edilmesini emretti. Söz konusu iki emirle ilk başta halkın sürgün edilmesi amaçlanmıştı ancak 1497 yılında gaye zorla din değiştirmeye dönüştü. Portekizli Yahudiler zorla vaftiz edildi, direnenler ise São Tomé ve Príncipe'ye sürgün edildi. Portekizli din değiştirenler tarihin bu çalkantılı döneminde 1506 Lizbon katliamı ve 1536 Portekiz Engizisyonunun oluşturulması gibi dinî zulümlere maruz bırakıldılar.
